Hungarian NA leader inaugurates photo exhibition on early-20th-century HCM City

VOV.VN - Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly Kover Laszlo on the morning of October 19 cut the ribbon to open a photo exhibition featuring early-20th-century images of Ho Chi Minh City taken by Hungarian naval doctor Dezső as part of his official visit to Vietnam.

The exhibition features photos capturing iconic buildings in downtown Ho Chi Minh City that have stood since the early 1900s, such as the Municipal Theatre (opened in 1900) and the City Hall, now the headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee. Other photos depict familiar cityscapes like Catinat Street (now Dong Khoi Street) and the city’s Botanical Gardens (now the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens).

The collection offers a vivid glimpse into Saigon over a century ago, portraying its urban landscape, classical architecture, and the tranquil daily life of local residents. The 23 photographs on display are digital reproductions from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asian Art.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Pham Thanh Kien, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, said the exhibition conveys a message that “culture is a bridge of friendship, a foundation for mutual understanding, respect, and stronger bonds between the peoples of Vietnam and Hungary.”

“The display of Dr. Dezső Bozóky’s valuable photographs taken in Ho Chi Minh City shows our respect for historical memories and cultural heritage. It also opens a creative space where artists, researchers, and art lovers from both countries can share emotions, experiences, and artistic inspiration,” Kien added.

Hungarian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Lehőcz Gábor said the photos were taken by Dr. Bozóky in March 1909, when his ship docked at Saigon Port during his voyage home. According to him, the exhibition is not merely a photo collection but a cultural journey connecting Vietnam and Hungary.
