Hollywood entertainment outlet Deadline reports on Vietnamese film Chớp bóng
VOV.VN - Deadline, a Hollywood entertainment news outlet, has reported on Vietnamese film Chớp bóng (Picturehouse), an international co-production between Vietnam, Singapore, France and the United States directed by Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh.
The film recently released its first trailer and announced its lead cast. Inspired by the director’s childhood growing up in his family’s cinema, Chớp bóng is a historical coming-of-age film following the journey of Quang during the 1960s. The family-run cinema becomes both a haven and a window to the world through samurai films from Japan, Hollywood westerns, French cinema and Hong Kong martial arts films amid the backdrop of war.
According to the production team, cinema serves as a spiritual anchor for people during wartime in the film, which was developed over six years.
Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh described the project as a fictional story inspired by people he knew, admired and loved while growing up in his grandfather’s cinema.
The cast announced for the first time includes Tran The Manh and Khazsak, two emerging Vietnamese actors. Tran The Manh previously appeared in the short film Before The Sea Forgets, screened at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival, and Quán Kỳ Nam (Ky Nam Inn) which was presented in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival. Chớp bóng marks his first leading role in a feature-length film.
Khazsak has also appeared in Vietnamese productions including Chị dâu (The Real Sister) and Trước giờ yêu B4S (Before Sex), as well as the South Korean film Biển sớm bình yên, (The Land Of Morning Calm ) which won multiple awards at the Busan International Film Festival in 2024, including the New Currents award.
Director Bao Nguyen also joined the project after previously collaborating with Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh as producer and cinematographer on Nước 2030 , which opened the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014.
Chớp bóng was filmed in Vung Tau, the hometown of Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh. Cinematography was handled by Nguyen Phan Linh Dan, who is set to receive the Angénieux Special Encouragement award during the Pierre Angénieux Tribute at Cannes in recognition of her work as a promising young cinematographer.
