Hoi An hosts diverse activities to celebrate International Museum Day 2026
VOV.VN - The Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Centre in Da Nang City is organising many activities in response to International Museum Day 2026 (May 18), spreading the value of heritage and strengthening community cohesion through museum spaces and cultural heritage sites.
The series began on May 11 with a one-day experiential programme titled “Journey to Touch Heritage,” jointly organised by the centre and Hanoi-based Chu Van An High School for the Gifted. Students from the school’s Grade 11 history-specialised class traveled through a network of museums, heritage sites, and traditional craft villages across Hoi An.
The specially designed journey allowed participants to explore the history of Hoi An’s ancient trading port while engaging in cultural, culinary, and local heritage activities through interactive challenges and storytelling experiences.
On May 17, the heritage centre will host a talk show titled “From Hands to Heritage,” focusing on traditional bamboo and coconut house-making crafts in Cam Thanh. The programme will feature local artisan Vo Tan Tan, who will share insights into traditional craftsmanship and local cultural identity.
One day later the centre will collaborate with the Live & Learn Environmental Education to organise the award-giving ceremony for the storytelling contest “Flood Memories – Stories from Grandparents.” The contest, launched in January 2026, targeted middle and high school students in Hoi An through the Green Citizens – Healthy Cities project.
Participants collected memories and stories from grandparents, relatives, and local residents about floods, natural disasters, and community adaptation experiences across generations. The competition aims to improve awareness of climate change, disaster history, and resilience while encouraging younger generations to connect with local memory and traditional knowledge. Outstanding entries will also be exhibited at the Hoi An Museum of Folklore.
International Museum Day 2026 will be celebrated on May 18, under the theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World”. Organised annually by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977, this event highlights the power of museums to foster understanding, dialogue, and peace, often featuring free entry and special activities worldwide.
Through diverse activities on the occasion of International Museum Day, the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Centre continues to affirm its commitment to innovating museum activities in accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Cultural Heritage which focus on the public, increasing interaction, storytelling, and community engagement.
At the same time, the centre aims to promote the application of digital platforms, social media, and new forms of communication to access to heritage for a wider range of audiences.
