HBSO to perform Schubert's Symphony No 8
The HBSO Symphony Orchestra will perform the Unfinished Symphony by Austrian composer Franz Schubert under the baton of well-known conductor Tran Vuong Thach at the HCM City Opera House on December 19.
Schubert's Symphony No 8 is considered by many critics to be the first important Romantic symphony due to its expressive melody, vivid harmony and creative combinations of orchestral tone colour.
It was also the first symphony to be written in two movements instead of the standard four.
Forty years after Schubert's death, the work was uncovered and premiered in December 1865 under the direction of Viennese maestro Johann Herbeck. The composition quickly became popular, and did not seem to suffer from incompleteness.
Included in the programme on Saturday is another notable Romantic work, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano concerto No 2 in C minor.
The concerto, considered to be one of the greatest romances, will be performed by the Republic of Korea's pianist Joo Eun-young with the HBSO Symphony Orchestra.
The concert will also feature the stupendous soprano Cho Hae-ryong performing Schubert's Ave Maria and Luigi Arditi's Il Bacio.
Tickets costing VND550,000, 400,000, 350,000, and 200,000, and 80,000 for students, are available at the venue.
