Hanoians enthusiastic about Mottainai swap

(VOV) -A ‘Mottainai’ swap meet to exchange used items was held at the Vietnam National University (VNU) on May 18 and attracted thousands of students and citizens in Hanoi.

Swap-goers brought bags of used clothes, books and other reusable items to exchange for ‘Vicen’ tickets that allowed them to buy things from different booths at the event.

They also tested their skills at stalls featuring handmade and recycled products and took part in traditional games, watched painters at work and tried on kimonos at the Japanese cultural space that was also part of the festival.

The event’s organizing board said about 700 books, magazines, and newspapers, as well as 1,200 items of clothing, 100 pairs of shoes and 500 office accessories, were exchanged during the morning of May 19.

Proceeds from the swap, which was held  by the VNU University of Economics and Business Media Communications Club (MCC), will be donated to charitable organizations and centres to help disadvantaged people.

Mottainai swap meets originated in Japan to encourage people to exchange their used, but still serviceable items with others and raise public awareness of protecting the environment and reducing waste.

Mottainai is an old Japanese exclamation to express regret when time, money and knowledge are wasted.
