Hanoi prepares for Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival

VOV.VN - Many workers in Hanoi are working hard to complete the preparations for the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival scheduled for March 23-26 in the area surrounding the statue of King Ly Thai To in Hoan Kiem District.

The first cherry trees are carried to Ly Thai To Square in the build-up to the festival which is part of activities marking the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations.
About 30 cherry trees, 10,000 cherry branches, some Vietnamese flowers, and ornamental trees are arranged for the festival display.
10,000 cherry branches are divided into different sizes, the smallest branches are 1-1.2 metres long, and the longest are 2.5 metres.
The cherry trees have been brought in from Okinawa where the climate and soil are similar to Hanoi.
At a press conference, To Van Dong, Director of Hanoi’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the festival aims to introduce Japanese culture to Vietnamese people and boost cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Cherry branches are kept in cold storage at 10 degrees C so they stay fresh for the festival.
Workers trim branches to the right length for decorations.
A Japanese expert instructs workers in the arrangement and care of plants and trees.
Workers need to be skilful and attentive when watering the flowers so that leaves do not wither quickly.
The decorations are nearly completed.
Aside from the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival, other activities will also be held, including display spaces for the Japanese tea ceremony, chess (Igo and Shogi), and the traditional game Kendama. There will be 20 pavilions at Hanoi Children’s Palace to showcase Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine, and Yosako dance will be performed on Dinh Tien Hoang Street.
