German artist opens Vietnam’s first photography biennale Photo Hanoi'23

VOV.VN - The “Light and Dark Stars” exhibition put on by German artist Adrian Sauer kicked off Photo Hanoi'23, the nation’s first photography biennale, at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in Hanoi on April 20.

Sauer is a professor of Photography and Generative Image Systems at Bielefeld University. He was recently awarded the SPECTRUM International Prize for Photography.

For him, photography represents a medium of reflection. The light reflected from various objects causes a pictorial representation of the material, but simultaneously photography is also both transparent and invisible. Through his artistic works, viewers think they see the motif, the object, rather than the photograph itself.

The exhibition “Light and Dark Stars” is scheduled to last until May 20, with several of his current and earlier works on display alongside the titular work 256 Graustufen (2020) and Palast der Republik (1993).

Launched by the French Institute in Hanoi, the first photography biennale is expected to attract 100 artists and feature more than 20 exhibitions and more than 20 side events such as film screenings, workshops, seminars, portfolio reviews, and an art tour. It has been designed to offer a fresh perspective to the cultural and artistic scene in the capital of Hanoi.

“Biennale” is a large-scale international exhibition which is held every two years all over the world, from Asia to Europe, and from East to West.
