French-Vietnamese artist’s exhibition highlights cultural connections

VOV.VN - An exhibition by French-Vietnamese artist Lien Pham titled “Tisser des liens” (Weaving connections) opened on March 13 at the City Hall of Paris’s 6th arrondissement, capturing interest from art enthusiasts and members of the Vietnamese community in France.

The opening was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to France Trinh Duc Hai,  showing the embassy’s attention to cultural activities of the Vietnamese community abroad.

Running from March 13 to April 4, the exhibition features 31 works of different sizes. Pham presents an experimental painting approach that combines acrylic paint with cotton threads attached directly to the canvas, creating geometric layers of light and form.

Born in Hanoi, the artist moved to France as an adult. She initially studied fashion design and worked for several years in the creative industry before turning to painting in 2021.

Speaking to the media in Paris, Pham said the shift allowed her to reconnect with personal artistic inspiration after years working in a highly industrialised creative environment.

The works in the exhibition explore themes of reflection and personal identity. Using threads, acrylic paint and contrasting colour surfaces, the artist builds layered visual structures. Some compositions evoke landscapes or natural elements, while others move toward abstract expression.

The threads stretched across the canvas function not only as visual elements but also as symbolic links suggesting connections between ideas, spaces and cultures.

The presence of Ambassador Trinh Duc Hai at the exhibition reflects the growing visibility of artists of Vietnamese origin in Europe’s cultural life.

In recent years, Vietnamese-heritage artists have appeared more frequently in local art spaces across Europe, contributing to cultural connections between Vietnam and host countries.

While “Tisser des liens” is primarily a personal artistic project within Paris’s contemporary art scene, the exhibition also reflects the increasing participation of artists of Vietnamese origin in international cultural life.

Through exhibitions and creative activities in France’s cultural institutions, they help present a dynamic image of the Vietnamese community abroad and strengthen cultural connections between Vietnam and France.
