Folk Me Folk You set for Hanoi
Nine bands from around the world will share a stage at the Folk Me Folk You festival at Hanoi Social Club on July 6.
Hailing from the US, You Say Tomato will play folk and country tunes in the inimitable style of their native land, while France's Christophe will perform irreverent, melodic tunes on ukulele.
Dung Thuy&Chi is the only local band on show at the event. Dung Thuy promises to break new ground playing the traditional Vietnamese dan tranh (16-sring zither) and transforming traditional Vietnamese music into the melody line of African beats and Nguyen Quynh Chi will play an accordion combining French and Vietnamese folk influences.
"We chose folk music for this festival because the Hanoi Social Club is well known for its folk/roots music background. There aren't many folk festivals of this nature in Vietnam and particularly Hanoi so we thought it would be cool to put one on," said one of the organisers, Dominic Fitzgerald.
Aside from the music, there will be craft workshops for making notebooks and games out on the street including sack toss.
The performance will start at 3pm at 6 Hoi Vu St, Hanoi. All door proceeds will be donated to charity.
