Folk dance festival charms Hanoi with centuries-old dancing

VOV.VN - The Trieu Khuc Village festival proved hugely entertaining as hundreds of spectators looked on as men disguised themselves as young girls and adopted a feminine persona in their gestures and movements during a street dancing event in Hanoi on February 13.

The festival, which traces its roots back hundreds of years, is traditionally held annually on the 9th day of the first lunar month. The event takes place at Tan Trieu commune in Thanh Tri district.
According to organisers, the unique Con Di Danh Bong dance is centuries old and dates back to General Phung Hung leading a war of resistance against Chinese invaders.
General Hung decided to make camp in Trieu Khuc village to allow his soldiers to get some much-needed rest.
With no women among his army, he allowed some of his soldiers to dress up like young girls and orchestrated dance shows to boost the men’s morale.

On display at the festival is also a number of other traditional dances.

Each year, a large number of local people and tourists enjoy watching the dancing event.
The success dancer lies in their ability to be emotionally expressive with their faces, looks, and gestures. To capture the spirit of the dance, they must be capable of producing an aesthetically feminine and authentic performance.

The festival lasts until the 12th day of the first lunar month.
