First two golds for Vietnam at Asian Youth Chess Champs

(VOV) - Le Tuan Minh and Tran Tuan Minh have both won gold medals in the boy’s U18 and U16 rapid categories at the ongoing 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Sari, Mazandaran, Iran.

In the U18 rapid event, Le Tuan Minh, seeded No. 4, defeated No. 2 seed Javanbakht Nima of Iran.

He then lost to No. 1 seed Ma Zhonghan of China but rebounded to gain more points with consecutive wins against other rivals, eventually winning the championship title in this event with 6.5 points.

In the U16 rapid event, Tran Tuan Minh was victorious in all seven matches and took home the gold medal with 7 points.

Another Vietnamese chess player, Chan Hung, earned a bronze medal in this U16 rapid category.

The 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships has attracted 270 players from 15 countries and territories, including 20 Vietnamese players who are competing in all U6-U18 categories.

The Vietnamese team is now in second place with two gold and three silver medals, while India tops the list with five golds, three silvers and six bronzes and China ranks third with two gold and two bronze medals.

The tournament will continue through June 27.
