Ethnology museum to celebrate Tet with diverse activities

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on the outskirts of Hanoi is set to hold its annual Tet celebrations to mark the start of the Lunar New Year, from February 2 to 18, that will feature art performances, food, and folk games, with the participation of representatives of ethnic groups from across the country.

The opening activity of the programme will be a ritual of erecting “Neu” tree, a tall bamboo pole believed to be able to ward off evil so that the souls of the ancestors can enjoy Tet with their family members, the most important festival held each year in the Vietnamese calendar.

Visitors will have the chance to learn more about Vietnamese customs during Tet, the biggest traditional holiday of the year, by taking part in various activities, including making Chung cake (square glutinous rice cake), calligraphic works, Dong Ho folk paintings, and water puppet shows.

Furthermore, children will be able to join in a variety of folk games, including tug of war, walking on stilts, còn (cloth ball) throwing, chess playing, and stick pushing. They will also be able to create their own folk toys, including Tò he (toy figurine) and pinwheels.

From February 13 to 16, or between the fourth day and the seventh day of the first lunar month, the museum will hold art performances such as Ai Lao singing and dancing, calligraphy, gong ceremonies of ethnic groups in the Central Highlands region, as well as water puppetry of the Kinh majority.

About 40 artisans from Hoi An Ancient City are expected to bring art performances to the event on February 17 - 18.
