Defending Champion Malaysia lost to Vietnam 0-2
Head coach Phan Thanh Hung has been credited for Vietnam’s 2-0 win over the Southeast Asian defending champion Malaysia in a friendly match on September 11.
Offensive host Malaysia had the chance to open the scoring in the 2nd minute but was stalled by guest defender Dinh Dong.
In the 13th minute, Vietnam got a free-kick in the right wing after midfielder Thanh Hung was faulted, but failed to hammer it home.
10 minutes later, winger Tan Tai had a skillful finish but was parried by the Malaysian defender.
In the 32nd minute, striker Cong Vinh received the ball from midfielder Trong Hoang and made a close header to defeat the Malaysian goalie.
The Vietnamese team had some more opportunities but failed to double the scoring.
In the 49th minute, Quoc Anh ran the ball down the left wing and passed it to attacker Thanh Hung, who beat the goalkeeper with a powerful semi-volley.
In the 53rd minute his teammate Tan Tai then kicked the ball but it missed the post.
Malaysia counter-attacked in the 60th minute but could not narrow the scoring when its player sent the ball over the crossbar.
The hosts then increased their attacks in the last minutes of the match but their efforts ended in vain.
