Czech-Vietnamese dictionary: A symbol of friendship

(VOV) - Two linguists have been compiling a six-volume Czech-Vietnamese dictionary to help the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic overcome the language barrier.

The third of the six volume series was launched at a book signing ceremony on November 19 in Prague organized by the Vietnam Embassy in collaboration with the Association of Vietnamese People in the Czech Republic.

Nguyen Quyet Tien, a cybernetics engineer who is fond of linguistics, has been nurturing the idea of compiling the dictionary since he was first sent to study in Czechoslovakia many years ago.

While teaching Czech to Vietnamese children, he found that the language barrier was a huge problem. He came up with the idea of compiling a dictionary to benefit the 65,000 Vietnamese living there.

To get the project started he teamed up with Doctor Ivo Vasilijev, an experienced researcher of Vietnamese culture and language.

At the event, the two co-authors introduced basic information about the third volume and eloquently pointed out that the work is a symbol of friendship between the peoples of Vietnam and the Czech Republic.
