Contemporary dance by choreographer Hervé Koubi to be staged in Vietnam

VOV.VN - The French Institute in Vietnam has just announced a special tour of the contemporary dance “What The Day Owes To The Night” (Ce que le jour doit à la nuit) choreographed by Hervé Koubi across Vietnam in June.

The performance is scheduled to take place in Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi, offering spectacular theatrical experience to art lovers.

First premiered at the Marseille-Provence which is called European capital of culture, “What The Day Owes To The Night” quickly became one of Hervé Koubi's most outstanding dance works.

Inspired by the novel of the same name by writer Yasmina Khadra, the piece of work recreates the choreographer's own journey of discovering his homeland Algeria, while also raising questions about identity, memory, and cultural exchange.

One of the production’s defining features is its bold combination of contemporary dance, hip-hop, ballet, gymnastics, and acrobatics. Drawing from the raw energy of street dance culture, Hervé Koubi has created a choreographic language that is both physically powerful and deeply poetic.

The performance brings together 14 talented dancers, mostly from the street dance and hip-hop communities. Under the guideline of Hervé Koubi, the spirit of urban dance is transformed into highly visual stage imagery which is reminiscent of Eastern aesthetics.

Beyond its technical virtuosity, “What The Day Owes To The Night” is also considered a humanistic work that creates dialogue between tradition and modernity, cultures, and generations. That emotional and artistic depth has helped the production captivate audiences at major international venues for more than a decade.

The Vietnam tour is scheduled for June 17 at the Hue Festival (Hue), June 19 at Ben Thanh Theatre (Ho Chi Minh City), and June 21 at Tuoi Tre Theatre (Hanoi). This is considered a noteworthy event for contemporary dance and hip-hop enthusiasts in the summer of 2026.
