Champa stone sculpture in Phu Yen recognised as national treasure

VOV.VN - The Kala relief from Nui Ba, a Champa stone sculpture, was officially recognized as a national treasure by the Prime Minister, with the announcement made during a ceremony held by the People's Committee of Phu Yen province on April 1st.

The artwork was discovered during an excavation at the Nui Ba archaeological site in My Thanh Dong village, Hoa Phong commune, Tay Hoa district, Phu Yen province. It is believed to date back to the 14th century and was moved to the Phu Yen Provincial Museum in 1993.

The Kala relief from Nui Ba is a Champa-era stone sculpture, carved from a rhomboid-shaped rock with a flat base and a pointed top. Made from Tup Riolit Daxit stone, the sculpture measures 60 cm in height, 44 cm in width, 17 cm in thickness, and weighs 105.5 kg.

According to archaeologist Bui Chi Hoang, the Kala relief from Nui Ba is a distinctive piece of Champa art and religion, dating from the 14th century. The Kala figure symbolizes divine power and protection in Hindu philosophy.

Vice Chairman of the Phu  Yen provincial People's Committee Dao My, stated that the recognition of the Kala relief from Nui Ba as a national treasure is not only a source of pride for Phu Yen but also an opportunity to promote the preservation and cultural heritage of Champa civilization.
