Celebrating 20th anniversary of Ha Long Bay World Heritage Site
(VOV) -A ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Ha Long Bay’s recognition as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site was held in Quang Ninh province on November 1.
Opening the ceremony, Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy Chairperson of the provincial People's Committee stressed that over past 20 years, the heritage’s natural value has been preserved, and bay attractions have a new facelift with a wide range of tourism products which attracts a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.
She added that in the coming period, Quang Ninh will continue promoting international cooperation to enlist the support of foreign communities and organisations to upholding the Ha Long Bay ‘s heritage value, enhancing investment on conservation activities, ensuring the ecological environment, and boosting promotion work to help Ha Long become a leading tourist destination in Vietnam and the world.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan affirmed that Quang Ninh has implemented a number of new initiatives to preserve the value of Ha Long Bay, making it become one of the world’s most attractive destinations with 3.6 million foreign visitors in 2013.
On December 17, 1994, UNESCO designated the bay a World Heritage Site of globally outstanding value in terms of natural landscape. The recognition was extended in 2000, and one year later, Ha Long Bay outranked 261 other landscapes around the globe to become one of the seven new natural wonders of the world.
