Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on March 7 for an official three-day visit to Qatar at the invitation of Prime Minister Hamad Bin Jasim Bin Jabel al Thani.

During the visit, the two countries are expected to sign several documents, including those on double tax avoidance and investment promotion and protection, so as to lay a legal foundation for increasing bilateral investment and business cooperation.

Bilateral ties have developed considerably since the two countries established their diplomatic ties in 1993, particularly after Vietnam opened its embassy in Doha in March 2008.

Two-way trade has increased significantly from US$32.8 million in 2007 to US$79.5 million in 2008.

Since 2006, the two countries have experienced strong development in labour cooperation with approximately 11,000 Vietnamese nationals working in various fields in Qatar.

In March 2003, Qatar Airways opened a direct route between Doha and Ho Chi Minh City with four flights per week. It planned to increase to 7 flights and open a new route to Hanoi in future.
