Vietnam among countries leading in poverty reduction

(VOV) - Vietnam has been listed as one of 38 countries having fulfilled the millennium development goals for poverty reduction, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced on June 12.

Vietnam already reduced the poverty level by half in the two period between 1990-1992 and 2010-2012.

FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva said these countries are leading the way to a better future. They prove that with strong political will, coordination and cooperation, it is possible to achieve a considerable reduction in hunger.

He said that these countries will be honoured at a ceremony in Roma, Italy on June 16.

Graziano da Silva urged all countries to keep up the momentum for the complete eradication of hunger, in line with the Zero Hunger Challenge initiative launched by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012.

According to FAO, hunger has declined globally over the past decade, but 870 million people are still undernourished, and millions of others suffer the consequences of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, including child stunting.
