The Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee has decided to establish a preservation zone for the Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), a mammal similar to the African oryx.

Covering 16,500 hectares, the zone will be located in Bhale and A Vuong communes in Tay Giang district and Ta Lu and Song Kon communes in Dong Giang district.

The Saola, one of the world’s rarest mammals, is a forest-dwelling bovine and found only in Vietnam and Laos.

Currently, Vietnam has about 200 head of Saola, most of them living in mountain areas of central Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.
