The nation marks International Day of Older Persons

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Association of the Elderly has organized a host of activities to take care of and promote the role of senior citizens, in response to International Day of Older Persons and the Action Month for the Elderly in October.

The association has adopted policies for the elderly, organized medical check-ups and entertainment activities, and visited older people.

Ngo Trong Vinh, President of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, says, “Every year, the world observes the Day of Older Persons with a different theme. This year’s topic is “Take a Stand Against Ageism” because there is still discrimination against ageism. If we don’t have the scientific and cultural means to handle and balance relations, it could lead to disagreement. Older people account for about 10% of Vietnam’s population."

Around 5 million people between 60-70 years old have bachelors, masters, and PhD degrees. Society should create conditions to take advantage of their intellects, he noted.
