Delegates will discuss measures to prevent nuclear terrorism and improve nuclear safety following the nuclear disaster in Japan’s Fukushima in 2011, according to RoK ambassador to Vietnam Ha Chan-ho.

Senior officials have finalised the Seoul Communiqué which will be submitted to the leaders for approval at this summit, said ambassador Ha.  

The communiqué outlines specific action plans to prevent nuclear terrorism, including minimising the stockpiling and use of dangerous nuclear materials such as highly enriched Uranium (HEU) and Plutonium, strengthening the safety of nuclear sites, and preventing the smuggling of nuclear materials.

It also highlights inter-correlation between security and nuclear safety, and the management of radioactive substances, which were not touched upon at the first summit in Washington, the US.

The RoK government is putting the final touch to preparations for the summit aimed at keeping the world safe and peaceful, free from nuclear terrorism, said the Korean diplomat.

Prior to the formal meeting, the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Industry Summit and 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Symposium will be held on March 23.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended the first summit in Washington, the US, in April 2010. His presentation highlighted Vietnam’s specific actions to ensure nuclear security, as well as countries’ responsibility toward the issue.
