A large exotic bird caught in Son La province

An unknown bird weighing 7.5kg and with a wingspan of 2.8m has been found near the Da River in the northern mountainous province of Son La.

The bird was caught by La Van Lien, a 62-year-old resident in Long Dan hamlet, Chieng Bang commune, Quynh Nhai district.

Lien said that the bird might have come from the nearby rocky mountain. Old inhabitants said they have never seen this bird which looks like a species of owls called To Lam Khau in the local language.

Each day the bird eats up 1.5kg of meat and several types of vegetables.

A local forest ranger believed that the bird might be a kind of vulture listed in the Red Book of Threatened Species, but there are no confirmed sightings of it in the northwestern region of Vietnam.
