The People’s Court of northern border Dien Bien province has delivered death penalties to two defendants for leading a 21-member ring in trafficking 1.825 kg of heroin from Laos into Vietnam.

Seven defendants were sentenced to life-imprisonment, three others to 20 years’ imprisonment and the rest to one-to-nine years’ imprisonment.

This was the first criminal case in the province that tried 21 defendants who live in the same village named Kep Xa in Tuan Giao district. Many of them belong to an extended family.

At the court, all 21 defendants confessed that from March to June 2007, they spent almost VND400 million (US$25,000) buying 1.825 kg of heroin in the Laotian village of Pa Hoc and then smuggle the stuff into Vietnam.
