Vietnam’s top weight lifter Hoang Anh Tuan is likely to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games due to his success in the regional qualifying round.

After five regional qualifying events for the Olympics Games in Beijing from August 8-24, Tuan lifted an overall weight of 279kg, which puts him at the top of the men’s 56kg regional standings.

Tuan will have to wait for the International Weightlifting Federation (IMF) to announce the last 14 male weightlifters to qualify for the Olympics in August.

Nguyen Thi Thiet is also expected to compete in Beijing following the success of the Vietnamese women’s national team in Kanazawa, where Vietnam ranked second only to Indonesia. Thiet is likely to compete in the women’s 63kg category.

So far, sixteen Vietnamese athletes have qualified for the Olympics in the events of taekwondo, wushu, shooting, table tennis, gymnastics and badminton.
