The first wind power plant in Vietnam has had its first wind turbines installed, and will start to generate electricity in August, said the Binh Thuan provincial Department of Industry and Trade.

Each of the turbines, situated in Binh Thanh commune, Tuy Phong district, is 92m high and has three blades 37.2m long. They have a capacity to produce 1.5MW each. They can produce electricity from winds of only 3m per second. The average wind in Binh Thanh commune measures more than 6.5m per second.

The Tuy Phong Wind Power Plant is being built in two phases, on a site of 1,500ha. The first phase will last until the end of 2009, when 20 turbines will be installed at a cost of more than VND996 billion. In the second phase which will last till the end of 2011, an additional 80 turbines will be erected.
