The outgoing chief of the Hanoi office of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has been honoured with an insignia in recognition of his contributions to preserving and promoting the Vietnamese culture.

Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Le Tien Tho presented the insignia "For the Cause of Culture and Information " to Chu Shiu Kee, Head and Representative of UNESCO Hanoi Office, at a ceremony held on March 27.

Chu Shiu Kee, who was born in China’s Guangdong province in 1948 and grew up in Hong Kong, assumed his post in Hanoi in 2003. During his four-year term, he has exerted great efforts to preserve and develop Vietnam’s tangible and intangible culture, as well as helping promote its cultural heritage to the outside world.

His working term in Hanoi saw Gong Culture in the Central Highlands proclaimed by the UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

He was also the project supervisor of a programme on preserving and promoting the values of Hue Royal Court Music (Nha Nhac Hue).
