In response to the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, more than 400 students and 100 fishermen attended a communication campaign in Quang Tri province to protect sea turtles on March 20-21.

Quang Tri is a central coastal province with a 75 km coastline, 68 km of which is very favourable for sea turtle breeding grounds.

The campaign, co-organised by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and the Quang Tri provincial Department of Aquatic Resource Exploitation and Protection, aims to make people aware of the importance of sea turtles within marine biodiversity.

During the two-day event, there were many activities including a film presentation, a photo exhibition, singing and sports contests, a cycling race, and a beach clean-up campaign to spread the message to protect the species and the ocean.

In 2009, IUCN worked with the local administration to run six training classes on the preservation and rescue of sea turtles for more than 300 fishermen, teachers and officials from secondary schools in the province and set up a voluntary preservation team.
