Honouring golden hearts for AO victims

Outstanding people include General Vo Nguyen Giap and late professor and people’s teacher Tran Van Giau.

The Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA) held a press briefing in Hanoi on January 11 to announce a plan for the “Honouring Golden Hearts for Agent Orange victims” programme.

Senior Lieutenant-General Nguyen Van Rinh, VAVA president, said this was part of a programme to compose songs for AO victims and honour outstanding individuals and organisations who supported AO victims and actively participated promoting struggle for justice for more than 3 million AO victims.

The organising board will honour 99 individuals and organisations, including 66 Vietnamese and 33 foreigners.

Rinh said one of the most outstanding people was general Vo Nguyen Giap who initiated the establishment of VAVA and actively supported AO victims. He wrote to international and domestic organisations, calling for their support in the struggle for the justice for AO victims.

Other outstanding people include Nguyen Phu Cu from Dan Tien village, Khoai Chau district, Hung Yen province and Cao Quang Hiep who provides VND2 million to the Fund for AO victims every month. The Viettel Group is the biggest donor with VND10 billion.

On the occasion, the organising board also announced that more than 70 songs have been composed for AO victims.

The “Honouring Golden Hearts for Agent Orange victims” programme will be held in Hanoi on January 24 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the spraying of Agent Orange in Vietnam (August 10, 1961- August 10, 2011).
