ASEAN’s common voice to help strengthen its role

ASEAN’s common voice on some United Nations (UN) issues will help strengthen the association’s role and image at the UN, said Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

Minister Minh emphasized this while attending an Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (IAMM) on September 24 on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly in New York City.

The Vietnamese FM praised the efforts to build a comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the UN.

He also urged the ASEAN committee at the UN and the UN Secretariat to work closely together to complete the draft of the joint declaration on ASEAN-UN cooperation by the time of the ASEAN-UN Summit in Indonesia in November 2011.

During the meeting, ASEAN FMs discussed preparations for the 19th ASEAN Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Indonesia on November 17-19, 2011.

They also discussed the draft declaration on the “ASEAN Community in the Global Community of Nations” and the East Asia Summit’s declaration on the principles of mutual-benefit ties.

On the same day, FM Minh attended a Meeting of the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission, which focused on ASEAN’s stance on nations with nuclear weapons joining the SEANWFZ Treaty.

** At a meeting between Mr Minh and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi, the two FMs reviewed the relations between the two countries to decide ways to strengthen them in the future.

** FM Minh also held working sessions with his counterparts from Thailand and Kazakhstan during which they discussed their bilateral relationships and international issues of mutual concern.
