Vietnam attends East Sea seminar in Australia
(VOV) - Vietnam has presented a report on claiming its territorial waters in the East Sea as well as legal documents proving its sovereignty over specific areas in the East Sea.
A seminar on the East Sea and Australia’s regional security environment was held in Canberra, Australia, on March 28 with the participation of 50 scholars, experts and international commentators involved in the military, security and diplomatic sectors.
The participants discussed a wide range of issues related to East Sea disputes, the role and administration of international law and, the stance of ASEAN and concerned parties on the East Sea, as well as US interests and Australia’s involvement in the East Sea.
They also proposed solutions for East Sea issues, stressing the need to ensure stability and avoid conflicts before agreeing upon a solution.
All parties concerned need to comply with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and reach a consensus on ASEAN’s proposal on the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), as well as proposals to prevent conflicts and promote maritime cooperation, they said.
The participants also emphasized that finding a solution to the East Sea disputes requires that China be actively involved.
Vietnam’s report on its claim to territorial waters in the East Sea received a positive response from those attending the seminar.
