These days, the entire Party, people and army are jubilantly celebrating the 61st anniversary of the August 1945 Revolution which put an end to almost 100 years of French colonial domination and five years of Japanese fascist occupation and established the first democratic republic state in the history of Vietnam, as well as Southeast Asia.

The country was unified and power was handed over to the working class. The Revolution dealt a severe blow to the colonial system and encouraged oppressed people across the world to rise up and liberate themselves.

The August Revolution brilliantly testified to the talent of the Party in grasping, analysing and seizing the political opportunity of the moment. The Party Central Committee in Pac Bo in May 1941 stated: “If we do not tackle national liberation, independence and freedom issues at the moment, our people will not only live in slavery, but our interests will no longer be guaranteed.”

After France and Japan began exchanges of fire on the evening of March 9, 1945, the Standing Bureau of the Party Central Committee issued an important directive entitled “The Japanese and French Conflict and Our Action”, directing our people to drive out Japanese fascists. The Party held that there were three major mature conditions for a general uprising, namely the political crisis following the Japanese coup, terrible starvation and the fierce war when Japanese troops are defeated, allied troops will enter Indochina and disarm them. It affirmed that the immediate enemy was the Japanese fascists and their agents. It launched a broad movement of struggle against the Japanese for national salvation as a prelude to the general uprising.

The general uprising was launched after our forces had made thorough preparations, Japanese troops’ will had deteriorated, and allied troops had not entered Vietnam. The uprising completely smashed the ruling puppet government of the Japanese and wrested power back to the people.

The August Revolution is the song of the Party’s will and people’s aspirations and of the bloc of great national unity. It was the revolution of the people, for the people and by the people under the leadership of the Party. It is a combination of the strength of the nation and the era, creating an invincible power, which can help wash away any obstacles and wrest back national independence.

The August Revolution is a song of majesty. Such a glorious song was written by the heroic Vietnamese nation under the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam founded and trained by beloved President Ho Chi Minh.
