Myanmar’s ruling party may have constitutional referendum
Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party said it may not put an amendment to the constitution to a vote in parliament but hold a referendum for a new amendment.
President Htin Kyaw and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi have stressed that constitutional reform is the NLD’s top priority.
In her New Year greetings delivered in mid-April, Aung San Suu Kyi underscored the need for a constitution that will create a federal democratic nation while saying that the NLD would amend the constitution in a way which would not adversely affect the people or national peace.
In 2014, the NLD gathered 5 million signatures on a petition asking parliament to change some articles in the constitution.
