Vietnam opened its representative office in Yangon in 1947. Its consul general level was lifted to the ambassadorial level in May 1975.
Over the past years, the two countries have actively broadened traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation. They exchanged high-level delegations including Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s official visit to Myanmar in August 2007 and Prime Minister Soe Win’s official visit to Vietnam in April 2005. The two foreign ministries held two political consultative meetings in Yangon in August 2005 and in Hanoi in August 2006.
Bilateral trade relations have grown and flourished in recent years. In 2006, two-way trade turnover hit US$71.9 million, an increase of 21.1 percent over 2005. The figure was US$70 million in the past ten months of this year. Vietnam exported electric and electronic products, garment and industrial accessories, drugs, medical equipment and plastic products, and imported wood products, cathodes, seafood, farm products and rubber latex.
The two countries have held five sessions of their Joint Commission for Cooperation, where they reached cooperation agreements on trade, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, industry, health care, tourism, telecom and aviation. A joint trade committee has also been established to boost bilateral trade.
Vietnam and Myanmar have actively coordinated at regional and international forums such as the Mekong sub-region (GMS), the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (AMECS), and the Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) cooperation framework.
