Myanmar boosts establishment of new government

Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD), met with the country’s Defence Services Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw on January 25 to discussed matters relating to the post-election transition period.

Issues in their discussion included the establishment of the new government and parliament, peace and stability in the transition period, and the continued implementation of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement.

They had the first dialogue on December 2, 2015, at the suggestion of Aung San Suu Kyi after her party won in the election one month earlier.

The next tenure of the House of Nationalities and the House of Representatives, elected at the general election on November 8 last year, is scheduled to begin on February 1.

Meanwhile, the country’s Union Election Commission appointed 366 military officers as parliament members at the two Houses and region or state parliaments, equivalent to 25% of the seats at each legislative body.

In the November general election, the NLD secured the majority of the seats at the national parliament, eligible to set up a government independently under the Constitution.
