Lao National Assembly election to be held on March 20

The general election for deputies to the eighth Lao National Assembly and members of the provincial People’s Councils will take place on March 20, the country’s National Election Committee announced at a press conference on February 15.

According to Chairman of the Lao NA Committee for External Relations Kukeo Akkhamonty, the Lao territory will be divided into 18 regions for polling.

From 211 candidates, including 50 women, Lao voters will choose 149 deputies to the eighth NA.

Meanwhile, 360 people will be selected to People’s Councils of provinces and Vientiane, the capital.

Laos’ constitution, revised in 2015, stipulates that a provincial People’s Council is established to consider and approve major issues at the locality, supervise operations of local power bodies, and adopt socio-economic development and budget plans.
