Japan to promote quality growth in Mekong region
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will seek support from leaders of five Southeast Asian nations for promoting high-quality growth during the upcoming Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo, sources from the Japanese government said on June 28.
The source said the Prime Minister wants to include the words “high quality growth” in the summit’s joint statement.
The five Mekong states attending the summit, which has been held annually since 2009, are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
PM Abe also plans to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the occasion.
The joint statement will be a revised version of a document released after the 2012 Mekong –Japan Summit, in which Japan committed to provide 600 billion JPY (US$4.8 billion) in official development assistance to the Mekong countries over three years from fiscal 2013.
