Victory over Fascism Day (May 9) is considered by many world historians as Great Victory Day, and a day of the triumph of good over evil, which bears eternal values of historic import.

With the passage of time, the victory’s significance has become increasingly well-established.  Misconceptions and disinformation about the invaluable sacrifices by the Soviet Union’s Red Army have been eclipsed, as well those about progressive and democratic forces in their joint struggle against fascism.

German, Japanese, and Italian fascists launched wars of aggression against a string of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania in a bid to rule the world and uproot the great October Revolution. The Second World War became the largest and most destructive war of the 20th century, killing 60 million people, maiming 90 million others and causing a colossal loss of about US$4 trillion. Of the total, the Soviet armed forces and people suffered the greatest losses: more than 27 million people killed, tens of millions of others wounded and over 17,000 cities, towns and villages destroyed.

It was the resilient and valiant spirit of combat of the Red Army and the people of the Soviet Union that shattered Hitler’s ambition to conquer the whole world. They not only liberated the occupied land in the Soviet Union but also freed a series of East European countries. The Red Army pushed deep into Nazi German territory, attacked Berlin and forced the German armed forces to surrender unconditionally to the Soviet Union and the Allies.

The victory over fascism was made in large part by the Soviet people under the leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, who helped save mankind from the fascist disaster and created a turning point in world history, bringing peace to many countries.

Many nations which belonged to the former Soviet Union have erected memorials to the soldiers who fell in the war against the fascists. These works in honour of the valiant warriors represent the victory of humanism and national self-determination, which no force could refute or distort.

Since the first moments of the anti-fascist struggle, the Vietnamese people fully supported the Soviet Union and other progressive forces. In its turn, the victory over fascism offered extremely favourable conditions for the Vietnamese people to successfully mount the August Revolution, opening up a new era in the nation’s history.

The Communist Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people have made many practical contributions to the fight against fascism such as holding meetings, publishing books and newspapers in support of the Soviet army, and sending volunteers to take part in the battle to protect Moscow in 1941, many of whom were killed in action and then received noble orders from the Soviet Union state.

Although fascist forces were routed 65 years ago, the modern world still faces many hostile forces that nurture schemes to dominate with military means and weapons of mass destruction. These forces have instigated many wars and conflicts, making the lessons of the Victory over Fascism meaningful in the current era. A great lesson to be drawn is the importance of upholding solidarity and cooperation among nations to eradicate war from the face of the globe.
