East Sea issue globally complicated: scholar
(VOV) - The territorial disputes concerning the East Sea are among the most complicated in the world, says Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
Quy made the statement at a November 19 seminar in Ho Chi Minh City, themed “The East Sea: Cooperation for Security and Development in the Region”.
In his opening speech, the diplomat briefed participants on the conflict prevention, peace making, and cooperation promotion efforts of stakeholders both directly and indirectly involved in the region’s East Sea disputes.
In addition to traditional security concerns such as disputes over islands and the sea, Quy also highlighted the seriousness of emerging security issues including piracy, environmental pollution, climate change, and the exhaustion of seafood resources.
He called on parties concerned to try even harder to develop measures with the capacity to improve the situation.
The seminar, the fourth of its kind, marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 10th anniversary of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.
Participants made the recommendations to the governments involved in the disputes, aiming to strengthen cooperation, and prevent and control any disputes as well as crisis in the East Sea.
