The first session of the 13th National Assembly (NA) opened in Hanoi on July 21, beginning a new term of the legislative body.

NA deputies are taking on new challenges with heavy duties and responsibilities to deal with national issues in line with people’s aspirations and expectations.

The election of the 13th NA, the country’s important political event in 2011 was very successful with 99,51 percent of voters going to the polls to elect a total number of 500 NA deputies.

The high turnout was undoubtedly a vote of confidence in the role of the NA as the top powerful State body of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam fully capable of deciding national important issues.

Over the past 65 years since the first general election on January 6, 1946, the NA has joined hands with the whole Party, army and people in the struggle for national independence and socialist construction to ensure freedom and happiness for all people in the process of building Vietnam into a powerful nation.

In the new period of national development, every deputy is required to take advantage of opportunities to overcome challenges arising from the Doi Moi (Renewal) process which aims to lay the groundwork for building the country into a modern industralised one with rich people living in an equal, democratic and civilised society.

With its important mission, the 13th NA will adopt guidelines, policies and effective measures to realize this goal.

Voters wish that the legislative body will continue revamping the legal system in a synchronous manner and institutionalizing the Party resolutions to serve the process of national development and improve people’s livelihood.

The NA needs to fulfill its role of supreme supervision over the State apparatus’s operations and make right decisions on important national issues to raise its status in the international arena.

The NA needs to improve the operational efficiency of its agencies to keep pace with the current process of the national development and international integration.

The legislative body’s good performance and significant contribution to building a socialist democracy has received acclaim from voters nationwide.

There is high hope that the number of NA deputies rising from 29 percent in the 12th tenure to 33 percent in the 13th tenure will further improve the quality, validity and operational efficiency of the legislative body.

New ways of meeting voters will make it possible to listen carefully to their opinions and realize their wishes to exercise the right to mastery while bringing its resolutions and laws to life.

The NA’s wise decisions must be based on the strength of the great national unity bloc to meet people’s aspirations and national interests.

The first session of the 13th NA will focus on organization and personnel work in which, the legislative body will elect and approve senior positions in its agencies, including Chairperson and Vice Chairpersons of the NA, and members of the NA Standing Committee, the State President and Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court, and the Head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.

It is expected that NA deputies will choose the most prospective and worthy candidates for such important positions.
