Senior officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have discussed in Kuching city, Malaysia, the process of implementing the group’s commitments towards the formation of the ASEAN Community at the end of this year.
According to Othman Hashim, Secretary-General of the Malaysian Foreign Ministry, on June 8, the officials focused on follow-up actions to the 26th ASEAN Summit which took place last April, including the Implementation of ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint, the Declaration on Strengthening the ASEAN Secretariat and Reviewing the ASEAN Organs.
Participants also discussed on regional issues such as the migration waves that several Southeast Asian nations are facing, he added.
Othman Hashim said the discussions were to prepare for ministerial meetings to be held in Kuala Lumpur in August as well as the leaders' summit in late this year.
Senior officials from ASEAN member countries and the group’s dialogue partners, including China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, are scheduled to gather in Kuching on June 9-10 for the ASEAN plus Three Senior Officials Meeting and the East Asia Summit Senior Officials Meeting (EAS SOM) as well as the ASEAN Regional Forum Senior Officials Meeting (ARF SOM).
