In a statement issued by his spokesperson on April 9, UN General Secrectary Ban Ki-moon lauded the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty as “an important milestone in the international efforts to advance nuclear disarmament and to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.”

Welcoming the disarmament efforts reflected in the 2010 US Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that he is “encouraged by recognition in the NPR of the need to strengthen IAEA safeguards, and the commitment expressed by the United States to expanding financial support for the agency.”

“Reducing the role and numbers of nuclear weapons is a positive step towards a safe and peaceful world free of nuclear weapons which can impact positively on nuclear non-proliferation efforts,” he added.

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith congratulated presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev on the historic accord to cut the number of deployed warheads by about one third.

"The new START agreement provides for substantial reductions in the numbers of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile launchers deployed by the United States and Russia," Smith said in a statement.
