Ambassador Le Luong Minh, head of the Vietnamese permanent mission to the United Nations, and his Nauru counterpart Marlene Moses have signed an agreement to establish diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Nauru.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in New York on June 21, both ambassadors asserted that the establishment of diplomatic ties has opened a new period for bilateral friendly co-operation and will enhance the friendship and mutual understanding between Vietnam and Nauru.

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Nauru - the world's smallest independent republic - joined the UN in 1999. It has a population of almost 14,000 people. The country's official languages are Nauruan and English while the Australian dollar is its currency.

Nauru is one of the three great phosphate rock islands in the Pacific Ocean. This tiny island's revenues have traditionally come from exports of phosphates, now significantly depleted. The rehabilitation of mined land and the replacement of income from phosphates are the country's most serious long-term problems.
