The Ministry of Industry and Trade has approved a US$780 million project to build a coal-fired power plant in the Red River Delta province of Thai Binh.
The Thai Binh 1 plant, with a design capacity of 600MW, will be built on an area of 194ha in My Loc commune, Thai Thuy district.
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) will contribute 85 percent of the total investment, and the remaining capital is sourced from Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).
Construction work on the plant will begin in the fourth quarter of 2009 and is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2013.
The plant is expected to consume more than 1.53 million tonnes of coal each year.
