At least seven bodies have been pulled out of the mangled wreckage left when two trains collided in eastern India early May 28, a railway spokesman said. About 45 passengers have been hospitalized.

An explosion triggered by rebels is believed to be the cause of the accident, officials said.

The crash at around 1.30 a.m. (4 p.m. ET) occurred in West Bengal state when a passenger train bound for India's financial capital Mumbai jumped the track, railway spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena said.

At least 13 cars of the Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Express derailed on an adjacent line and were slammed by a cargo train, he said.

Saxena did not have immediate information about the loss of lives or injuries feared from the wreck. "Casualties could be there. We are awaiting details," he said.
