Three people died on September 18 in accidents linked to Typhoon Fanapi's approach to Taiwan's eastern coast, where it is expected to make landfall on 20, reported Taiwan's official news agency.

On Saturday, a 76-year-old woman who was trying to harvest her crops before Fanapi's arrival apparently fell from a terraced hill into a river and droned in Pingsi Township in Taipei County, the Central News Agency reported.

Two junior-high school students in the northern county of Taoyuan also died on September 18 morning. They were among a group of seven students who were visiting the flooded Taoyuan Canal when the girls slipped off the bank in the rain, CNA said, citing police.

According to CNN models, Taiwan can expect 3.1 - 9.8 inches (80 - 250mm) of rain, possibly 19.7 inches (500mm) in isolated areas, in the coming 48 hours.
