The National Paediatrics Hospital has successfully conducted a 15-hour liver operation on a 16-year-old boy who was affected by chronic hepatitis.

Ho Tuan Anh was born into a family which have seen seven members die from the disease.

Dr Nguyen Thanh Liem, director of the hospital, joined a number of Vietnamese surgeons and four Taiwanese specialists in the transplant, which ended by 10pm on April 7.

The donor was the patient’s 42-year-old uncle, who did not have to receive transfused blood during the operation and is now already conscious.

This is the fifth successful operation carried out by the hospital.
