An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted off the east coast of Japan's main Honshu island at 5:24 a.m. Beijing Time on Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Network Centre.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was monitored at 38.3 degrees north latitude and 143.0 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
After an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on Wednesday morning, the region so far has been hit by other strong earthquakes for nine times in succession, all measuring 6.0 or above on the Richter scale, according to the centre.
