Vietnamese youth chess team shines on global stage

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese youth chess team has officially wrapped up its campaign at the FIDE World Chess Championships (U7-U17) in Spain, bringing home two medals.

The tournament, featuring intense competition across various age groups, saw the young Vietnamese talents leave a strong impression with one silver and one bronze medal, alongside substantial Elo rating gains on the International Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings.

This year’s event applied standard rapid chess formats with a time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, running at an intensive pace of two rounds per day.

This grueling format tested the young talents' tactical acumen while demanding high physical endurance and intense concentration across 11 tense rounds.

Notably, in the U15 girls' division, young chess prodigy Vu Nguyen Bao Linh delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 7.5 points out of 11 rounds, comprising seven wins and one draw, to secure the silver medal.

This impressive run earned her a performance rating of 2113 and an addition of approximately 198 Elo points on the FIDE leaderboard.

In the Open section, young player Nguyen Manh Duc tallied 8 points with seven wins and two draws, finishing third to claim the bronze medal.

This is not the first time Vietnamese chess has left its mark at the youth level. At the 2026 Asian Youth Chess Championships, Vietnamese players achieved remarkable success that prompted special praise from FIDE. Beyond elite accomplishments, Vietnam boasts a generation of student-aged stars, such as Dau Khuong Duy, Banh Gia Huy, and Pham Tran Gia Phuc, all rapidly approaching the Grandmaster title.
