Vietnam U23 open AFC U23 Asian Cup with composed win over Jordan

VOV.VN - Vietnam U23 opened their AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 campaign with a composed 2-0 victory over Jordan U23, underlining the squad’s tactical discipline and match control.

Vietnam U23 made an assertive start that reflected thorough preparation and a clear attacking plan. From the opening minutes, the team was encouraged to attempt long-range efforts, with Khuat Van Khang testing the Jordan goalkeeper in the second minute from nearly 30 meters.

Beyond posing a direct threat, the shots forced a series of corner kicks, highlighting a deliberate set-piece approach devised by head coach Kim Sang Sik and his staff. Against a physically stronger opponent, Vietnam avoided aerial contests, opting instead for driven, curling deliveries aimed directly at goal.

With Dinh Bac and Khuat Van Khang taking corners, the ball was whipped at pace into the six-yard area rather than floated for headers. The tactic unsettled Jordan U23, and both goals came from corner situations, underscoring the effectiveness of Vietnam’s set-piece execution.

Defensively, Vietnam U23 pressed from midfield and protected the central channel tightly, limiting Jordan’s access to dangerous areas and forcing attacks wide. As a result, Jordan created few clear chances, their most notable effort being a direct free kick by Qashi that struck the crossbar. It was not until the 87th minute that Jordan registered their first shot on target, comfortably handled by goalkeeper Trung Kien.

In midfield, Thai Son delivered a composed performance, acting as an anchor to disrupt central attacks while facilitating build-up play. His ball retention and ability to escape pressure helped Vietnam transition smoothly from defense to attack.

Dinh Bac also stood out with a disciplined display. Operating deeper than his usual role, he linked midfield and attack through effective ball-carrying and intelligent positioning.

While tougher challenges lie ahead, Vietnam U23’s calm, controlled performance marked a positive start to their Asian championship campaign.
